concert: verdigris ensemble ‘beautification’

verdigris ensemble and dallas contemporary are pleased to announce their partnership for the 2023 verdigris ensemble fall season, which will include two productions presented at dallas contemporary dedicated to themes of ecological justice and the environment: ‘the endangered,’ from october 27-29, and ‘beautification,’ from december 1-3.

‘beautification’ | friday, december 1 to sunday, december 3, 2023 | 7:30 pm

verdigris ensemble unites with the dallas contemporary for this co-commission, bringing a memorable collaboration inspired by the museum’s site-specific fall exhibition with visual artist bianca bondi. taking cues from ladybird johnson’s highway beautification act, which aimed to protect native plants from billboards along stretches of texas highway, bondi presents a monumental artificial landscape representing the struggle between the natural and commercial world. using the exhibition as inspiration, verdigris ensemble is commissioning 8-10 women composers to weave together a narrative about lady bird johnson’s efforts, comparing her actions to the resilient native flowers of texas. the production will feature innovative light projections that mimic the experience of highway driving and archive audio of ladybird’s speeches.

limited capacity.

verdigris ensemble is a choral ensemble that commissions works and incorporates various genres to tell compelling stories, aiming to transform our world through the alchemy of stories and the power of the human voice, with a strong reliance on technological innovations. the ensemble, under artistic director sam brukhman, sites concerts in cultural locations throughout the city of dallas, working to connect different artistic disciplines and modes of presentation through collaborative productions that amplify the creative diversity of the region.

dallas contemporary is a non-collecting, kunsthalle museum with the privilege of presenting the vanguard of contemporary artistic practice through exhibitions, public programs, and performances. the museum believes that the display of art objects, discourse, and community activity work together to advance our understanding of the art of this moment. by virtue of its flexible nature, like verdigris ensemble, dallas contemporary is uniquely positioned to map dallas as a locus of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration in the arts.

this fall season, verdigris ensemble’s two productions at dallas contemporary will focus on the perils facing the environment and the justice movements working to protect it.

bianca bondi: a preservation method

join us for the opening of a preservation method, the first solo us museum exhibition by the paris-based, south african artist bianca bondi, organized by dallas contemporary associate curator emily edwards.

bianca bondi's immersive, multi-sensory installation is based on bondi’s research into the highway beautification act of 1965, passed by texan president lyndon b johnson and inspired by his wife, lady bird johnson, and her passion for the environment.

the act was intended to preserve the native plants and wildlife already under risk by the building of highway infrastructure. since its passing, open-space advocates and commercial companies have battled over the continued placement of thousands of billboards along texas roads.

as homage to the highway beautification act, bondi will construct a billboard in the gallery, displaying its carcass as a relic amongst flora and fauna inspired by the texas terrain, presenting a monumental artificial landscape representing the struggle between the natural and commercial world, compelling visitors to revisit forgotten legislation in order to recenter highly-attainable goals within political discourse.

CHRISTEENE

saturday, 04 november 2023

8.00 pm doors open. 9.00 pm performance

$25 admission

161 glass st.

CHRISTEENE is the dazzling alter ego of the multi-talented paul soileau. with a knack for pushing boundaries and embracing the unconventional, CHRISTEENE is a riotous force of nature, bringing chaos and artistry to the stage.

spin magazine has called CHRISTEENE “a manic combination of alice cooper and hedwig (of the angry inch),” and interview called her “...a feral, sexualized creature that takes a blowtorch to every norm society has to offer.”

CHRISTEENE “...injects both hip-hop and gay culture with a much needed dose of punk-rock humor and attitude,” said the new yorker. at the heart of CHRISTEENE, though, says dazed magazine, even though she may shock, “her real message is one of joy and love.”

iconoclastic designer rick owens (one of her longtime collaborators and friends) states, “CHRISTEENE to me represents the joy of abandon – abandoning hypocrisy and indulging your id and your primal instincts that are very innocent and very charming… CHRISTEENE is theater, a composition of commedia dell’arte, kabuki, busby berkeley hollywood musicals… she counters false prudishness, false rules.”

CHRISTEENE is presented as an ancillary program with the exhibition chloe chiasson: keep left at the fork, on view at DC through 17 march 2014, which depicts queer figures in texan landscapes. in light of the state of texas’s recent legislations against the LGBTQI+ community, dallas contemporary is proud to present this performance.

mature audiences. limited seating is available.

about CHRISTEENE | CHRISTEENE is a raw spirit of ferocious music, unabashed sexuality, and fiery intimate stank. reports from live shows describe raw and intimate exchanges, distressed choreography, macabre scenes involving butt plugs tied to bouquets of balloons being released from the singer’s ass, wardrobes styled from the forgotten scraps of society, and heated sermons on the state of the world as we know it. the artist has collaborated with, as well as performed with, numerous acclaimed musicians, including faith no more, peaches, fever ray, john grant, kembra pfahler, suicide, roddy bottum, tribe 8, narcissister, marc almond, bronski beat, and justin vivian bond. longtime collaborators include award winning filmmaker pj raval, along with iconic fashion designer rick owens and artist michèle lamy. matty davis + ben gould: carriage, bearance, and severance

DC performance | matty davis + ben gould: carriage bearance severance

friday, 20 october 2023

7.00 pm - 8.00 pm + reception to follow

$10 admission

complimentary drinks (for 21+ only)

161 glass st.

called “an extraordinary, riveting performance that viscerally explores the limits of physical endurance and mutual cooperation” by curator and critic dan cameron, carriage bearance severance constitutes a trilogy of extremely physical, provocative performances by matty davis and ben gould created between 2015 and the present, and marks the trajectory of a relationship forged by shifting need, desire, and growth.

davis and gould’s work together began as an investigation of reliance, control, and care. matty davis is an artist and choreographer engaged in collaborative, embodied explorations of the tension between our fragility and our fortitude. his work frequently uses choreography as an instrument to cultivate high-stakes relationships—ranging from the interpersonal to the cosmic—that push himself and others to creatively face and negotiate forces that drive some of the most important parts of our lives: trust, risk, love, empathy, commitment, and responsibility. after the sudden and late development of tourette syndrome, ben gould’s practice adapted to harbor an investment in the body - exploring loss of control, resistance, and energy systems within and outside our physiology. within a growing mythos shaped through personal medical procedures, the history of disability treatment, and the embodiment of new narratives constructed through making, a space for fantasy and freedom is created in his work -  opposing the rigidity of physical limitation and societal norm. with the body as a source, gould’s multidisciplinary practice is driven by his neurological condition, providing a choreographic motor and ideological framework for projects ranging from site-specific performances to sculpture and film.

this will be the us museum premiere of carriage bearance severance. the work was previously performed at palais de tokyo, bozar, carnegie mellon’s miller ica, human resources, the chicago cultural center, open spaces, creative growth, queenslab, as well as at a former military battery, in a limestone cave network, and aboard a moving vessel on the chicago river.

limited seating is available.

🚨 DC members get in free! register for a dc membership starting at $35 linked here. existing members, RSVP to rsvp@dallascontemporary.org
