Finding subjects in his closest surroundings throughout his practice, Birgir Andrésson explored history and memory, as well as the spoken and written word. Andrésson’s interest in methods of communication was heightened by growing up as a sighted person with blind parents in a home for the visually impaired. In addition to language, elements of humor, as well as national and personal identity, are important to his practice. Andrésson represented Iceland at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and was recently included in For What It’s Worth: Value Systems in Art since 1960 at The Warehouse in Dallas, curated by Thomas Feulmer and Lisa Le Feuvre.

“After recently moving to Texas, I'm excited to introduce some of my favorite contemporary artists from Los Angeles to the art community here in Dallas. I'm thrilled to highlight Casper Brindle's Glyph wall sculpture available at the benefit auction.
The light and space movement started in the 1960s as local artists sought to incorporate the sunshine with the materials in glass houses, surfboards and car culture native to Los Angeles.
Just as abstract expressionism remains a constant in NYC, light and space has carried on from the pioneers like James Turrell, Doug Wheeler, and Robert Irwin in LA.
Casper Brindle's Glyph series are a great example of how the next generation has pushed the movement into more colorful and impactful territory.”
— Tyler Lemkin, Art Chair of Dallas Contemporary’s 2024 gala auction.
Deborah Brown
-
Oil on canvas
60 x 48 inches
Courtesy of the artist
-
Starting bid: $25,600
Deborah Brown’s kaleidoscopic renditions of NYC’s neighborhoods and micro-communities came as a surprise for the artist herself, a New Yorker of forty-two years who rediscovered her own city during the pandemic. Windows and Air Conditioiners portrays Brown’s shadow on the deserted streets of New York as she wandered around with her long-time canine companion, Trout. The sights, sounds and characters of the grand metropolis invigorate Brown’s practice, infusing it with an electrifyingly exciting palette and a bravado brushwork that is fresh and spontaneous, but only achievable with decades-long experience.

Starting bid: $16,400
Venice-based artist Irene Cattaneo is enthralled by the interplay between light and matter. To her, Venice embodies a duality: both ephemeral and fragile, yet timeless and resilient. This tension is reflected in her work, where a solid bronze branch contrasts with delicate clouds, which, despite their transient nature, are immortalized in glass. As light filters through these forms, it creates mesmerizing shadows, reminiscent of sunlight shimmering across the Venetian lagoon.

Ragnar Kjartansson
-
watercolour on paper
47 x 63 x 1 ½ in
Courtesy of the artist + i8 Gallery
-
Starting bid: $24,000
Ragnar Kjartansson engages multiple artistic mediums, creating video installations, performances, drawings, and paintings that draw upon myriad historical and cultural references. An underlying pathos and irony connect his works, with each deeply influenced by the comedy and tragedy of classical theater. The artist blurs the distinctions between mediums, approaching his painting practice as performance, likening his films to paintings, and his performances to sculpture. Throughout, Kjartansson conveys an interest in beauty and its banality, and he uses durational, repetitive performance as a form of exploration. His film The Visitors (2012) was acclaimed as the best artwork of the 21st century by The Guardian in 2019, and he was the recent subject of a retrospective exhibition, Epic Waste of Love and Understanding, at Louisiana museum in Denmark.

“Raised in a household of actors, Ragnar Kjartansson is a master of harnessing the drama and pageantry embedded within everyday experiences — loss and heartbreak, religion and politics, family and friends — with a rare wit that makes banal and ordinary cliches somehow transcendent. This dark and broody watercolor of a stormy night sky, included in his recent retrospective at Louisiana museum in Denmark, is no exception. At about the size of a domestic window, one can imagine the routines of daily life playing out in front of the painting as if it were the backdrop to some theater or opera set, a stage for the monologues and arias of daily life.”

Graphite, ink, tea stains on paper
35 x 30 inches

Lee continues to tease out mythologies, both pre-existing ones and those he conceives in his mind.

“I am so happy that Umar Rashid donated such an intricate painting to the DC Benefit Auction this year. I love how it juxtaposes his background in street art and hip-hop culture with the overall theme of his work: re-imaging history during the colonial period.
This painting reminds me of propaganda posters from the Cuban Revolution. Still, it features a fascinating character who is a warrior from a time period we can't quite put our finger on. It's one of those paintings I can never get tired of looking at.”

Through her mixed media practice, Kelliher-Combs chronicles the ongoing struggle for self-definition and identity within the Alaskan context. Her blend of public iconography with deeply personal imagery reveals the dynamic interplay between these elements, showcasing how each can influence and enrich the other. By integrating synthetic, organic, traditional, and modern materials, she transcends dichotomies like Western/Native culture, self/other, and man/nature, exploring their interconnections and questioning conventional notions of beauty. Kelliher-Combs’ work metaphorically resembles skin, serving as a surface through which individuals interact with and are defined by their cultural context.
