zines
lesson plan by learning coordinator victoria brill
create your own tiny publication, right at home! making a zine is all about creativity + self-expression. they can encompass anything you’re interested in! there are all kinds of zines, including: fan zines, cooking zines, comic zines, art zines, poetry zines, diary zines, + so much more. with no set rules, zines are limited only by your imagination!
all ages
supplies
paper
scissors
writing/drawing utensils (pencils, markers, or crayons)
optional supplies
this activity is limited only by your imagination! below are a few of my favorite things to use.
glue
stamps
washi tape
string / yarn / ribbon
stickers
colored / patterned paper
step 1
fold your sheet of paper in half.
fold it again into quarters.
fold once more so the paper is now in eighths.
step 2
unfold your paper until it is only folded in half once, horizontally.
you should now see four folded squares.
step 3
cut your paper halfway through the middle of the fold.
when you fully open your paper you should have a slit in the center.
step 4
fold your paper lengthwise (along the crease that has the slit).
hold the paper at either end, then push the ends in toward each other.
the sections should fold into each other creating an eight page booklet.
step 5
now it’s time to fill in your blank booklet + turn it into a zine!
how you fill it in is up to you. it can be strictly image or text based, or even a blend of the two.
use the basic supplies or add your own extra elements!
step 6
you have completed your first zine!
you can keep it for yourself, give it as a one-of-a-kind gift, or make copies to share with your friends.
be sure to share your zine by using the hashtag #dcfromhome
