still-life headpieces
inspired by john currin
lesson plan by learning coordinator victoria brill
while representational of everyday objects (like food, flowers + household items) the still-life genre throughout history has been used as a medium for symbolizing various themes + ideas. through the covert nature of the still-life, artists can create seemingly simple compositions with a depth of hidden meaning. using the symbolic power of the still-life, collect + create a sculpture of found-objects that symbolizes important pieces of you.
create a unique, found-objects sculpture for your head! inspired by John Currin’s paintings Pistachio, and Newspaper Couple, this activity will focus on exploring elements that contribute to create your unique identity. you will collect small objects from throughout your home, connect personal meaning to these objects, + create a wacky sculpture that is all about you!

this activity is limited only by your imagination!
step 1
find your still-life objects!
consider objects that could stand in as a symbol for things that are important to you.
while searching for objects, create connections by asking yourself questions like:
what is your favorite color?
what is your favorite hobby?
do you have a favorite book, TV show, movie, or video game?
are you interested in a particular sport?
what kind of music do you listen to?
do you have a pet?
is there someone significant in your life like a friend, sibling, or family member?
what is your heritage?
do you have any heros?
what is one of your greatest achievements?
what is one of your most sought after aspirations?
by connecting meaning to each found-object that is added to your still-life, you will create a unique reflection of who you are.
step 2
once you have gathered all of your meaningful objects, begin constructing your still-life.
carefully use hot glue to glue your objects to your headband, stacking + securing all of the pieces.
step 3
once the glue is dry, try on your completed still-life headpiece!
reflect on the connections you have made with these objects.
what conclusions might others draw about your interests based on the objects you chose?
think about new connections you could add to your identity still-life in the future.
