seed sprouting
lesson plan by learning coordinator victoria brill
sprout your own tiny garden using the baggie method! this simple, mess free project allows you to watch any seed or bean go through their earliest stages of growing.
ages 3 and up
supplies
plastic zip top bag
seeds
paper towel
water
tape
sharpie or marker
step 1
select your seeds!
any seed or dried bean that you can find will easily sprout in your baggie.
consider seeds you may have in your home.
(apples, oranges, limes, lemons, tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, …)
step 2
moisten your paper towel with sink water.
you want it to feel damp, not soaked.
if you added too much water, wring out the excess.
step 3
lay your paper towel flat, + place your seeds on half of the towel.
step 4
fold the paper towel in half so that the seeds are sandwiched within.
place the paper towel inside of the plastic baggie + seal.
Step 5
mark the date + seed type on the baggie with a marker.
tape the baggie to a window that receives lots of light.
step 6
check on your seedlings everyday + watch them grow!
step 7
once the sprouts seem large enough, move them to a small pot with soil.
