gesture drawing in 3D! capture the movement of the human body by building an action figure out of aluminum foil. this project employs techniques used in observational drawing.
ages 8 + up
supplies
foil (16 inch sheet)
scissors
drawing utensil (pencil, marker or crayon)
paper
step 1
ask a friend or family member to act as your model, + begin sketching a few quick poses.
increase the difficulty of each drawing by having your model exaggerate their movements.
once you feel warmed up, move on to step 2.
step 2
make five cuts in your foil (diagram below).
step 3
slowly begin scrunching + squeezing the foil to form limbs.
step 4
have your model pose for you.
gently squeeze + twist the foil into your desired positions.
if any foil or limb falls off, secure it back with a small amount of additional foil.
try to balance your sculpture so that it can stand on its own.
