Forty years ago, D’Art was founded by Patricia Meadows and Judy Hearst, later to become Dallas Contemporary. In its early days, the organization functioned as a platform for local emerging artists. Over the years, the institution began to emphasize professionally curated exhibitions. In 2010, DC donors raised the stakes by purchasing a 37,000 square foot building in the Design District; DC’s permanent home. With exhibition programming including national and international artists, the museum today takes after European art centers while maintaining its distinctive character. Landmark shows with Joseph Havel, Zoe Crosher, Georg Herold, Julian Schnabel, and David Salle, as well as the development of the one-of-a-kind youth education program, have all helped DC establish itself as a unique institution with local ties and international reach.
